History.

Lord Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen.

His C -in - C's signal ordered him: "to leave off action." His response to his Flag Captain Foley was: "Foley, I have only one eye, I have a right to be blind sometimes." after raising his spyglass to his right eye, he added: "I really do not see the signal!"

Before the Battle of the Nile. To his officers with whom he had just dined:

Before the Battle of Trafalgar Nelson ordered his Flag Lieutenant to send a signal to the Fleet:
